in the 1930-1950s richard paul lohse (1902-1988) was among switzerland's most prolific book designers. he was involved in the design of around hundred books for the büchergilde gutenberg alone.

this is the secon volume of swiss author jakob bührer's (1882-1975) trilogy "in the red field". lohse's jacket montage contrasts a historic drawing of a woman at her spinning wheel with machine-age bobbins - with threads in a geometric pattern similar to lohse's jacket of 23, and the next story.

while the jacket employs akzidenz-grotesk, the titles on cover and inside title are in a bold roman.
